The Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) met with a high-profile delegation from the German Parliamentary Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development at their Tema Office on July 8, 2024.

The delegation from the Authority was led by the CEO, Amb. Michael Oquaye Jr., and Deputy CEO for Finance and Administration, Mrs. Kate Abbeo.

Due to the German government's intent to strengthen its ties with the country and deepen trade and investment relations, the envoy visited the Tema Office to evaluate the progress of projects funded by the German government through the GIZ's "Decent Work for Just Transition Project."

The GFZA CEO, Amb. Michael Oquaye Jr., took the opportunity to present to the delegation the successful implementation of some German-sponsored Free Zones projects and provided a detailed analysis of the export revenue of German Free Zones enterprises and the corresponding employment opportunities from their operations.

The presentation included a comprehensive review of key initiatives under the German-sponsored project, which aligned with the GFZA's objectives.

These initiatives comprised a shuttle service (affordable transportation), canteen service infrastructure, and training programs for Enclave staff, construction of a water supply system complete with storage facilities, and an integrated distribution network within the Tema Export Processing Zone.

The Managing Director of LMI Land Holdings, Richmond Frimpong, who was also present at the event, delivered brief remarks expressing his gratitude to the envoy for the impact their nation has had on the enclave and the GFZA as a whole.

The head of the German delegation, Dr. Christoph Hoffman, indicated that he was impressed with the state of progress of the various projects. The two lead dignitaries exchanged pleasantries and gifts before heading out for a tour of the Tema Free Zones Enclave.

The tour included a visit to DTRT Apparel (one of many German-related Free Zone Enterprises) and other enterprises to observe the operations firsthand.

Ambassador Oquaye Jr., in his closing remarks, expressed his sincerest gratitude on behalf of the entire management of GFZA to the German government, GIZ, KFW, and IFE, for their support.

"These projects have been beneficial for the environment, improved the well-being of workers, and would lead to further employment creation in the country," he stressed.

He also expressed great satisfaction at the collaboration's impact, indicating that it had set a positive example to replicate in other designated enclaves.

The Ghana Free Zones Authority CEO said it remains committed to promoting partnerships, investment, economic development, and a conducive business environment to attract both local and foreign investors.
