The Ministry of Transport has confirmed the reinstatement of staff members from the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) who were implicated in a cocaine smuggling case at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

The incident, which took place on March 23, 2024, involved the smuggling of 8.5 kilogrammes of cocaine aboard a Royal Air Maroc flight.

The drugs were seized at Brussels Airport in Belgium, and a GACL employee was accused of facilitating the operation.

Following the arrest, GACL suspended the staff members pending further investigation.

Speaking during a session before the Government Assurances Committee in Parliament, Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, revealed that the implicated employees had been exonerated after a thorough investigation and have since been reinstated.

In addition to addressing the cocaine smuggling case, the Minister also responded to concerns about the rising cost of domestic flights.

He indicated that ongoing discussions with stakeholders aim to resolve the issue, but if these talks prove unsuccessful, the government may step in to regulate flight prices.
