Ghana Post computerizes its services

Koforidua, Sept. 24, GNA - Ghana Post has computerized its services so customers who send mails by EMS can now track the mails on its website in the comfort of their homes and offices.

The new measure aims at strengthening the company to withstand the competition introduced by the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT).

Mr Abdel Raphieu, Managing Director of Ghana Post, said this in a speech read on his behalf at the Sixth Quadrennial Delegates Congress of Post and Telecommunication Retired Officers Welfare Association at Koforidua on Friday.

Mr Raphieu said with the growing competition in the postal service, the company had adopted a growth strategy and diversified its activities by taking advantage of its network and automation and established partnership with many organizations to act on its behalf.

He said plans were also far advanced for the company to send SMS text messages to letter box owners when they receive letters in their boxes on request and also for them to pay their letter box bills at any post office.

The three-day national congress is being organized under the theme: “Turning Challenges into Opportunities.”

Mr Raphieu said the domestic money transfer programme of the service had been repackaged and introduced as the Cash Post.

He assured that management would continue to introduce more innovative services and products, embark on infrastructural development and provide the needed human resource base that could sustain the continuous development of the company.

The Eastern Region Minister, Dr Kwasi Akyem Apea-Kubi, urged management to take advantage of the challenges they faced with the technological advancement and turn those challenges into opportunities.

He urged the current staff of Ghana Post to guard against negative acts that could militate against the progress of the company.

Dr Apea-Kubi congratulated members of the association for their dedication and commitment while they were in active service.

He urged members of the association to offer their experiences to the present management and the communities where they lived and assured them of the commitment of the government to the welfare of retirees and pensioners.

Earlier in a welcoming address, the National Chairman of the association, Mr Edmund Ayittey Tagoe, expressed concern about the refusal of Vodafone to extend any support to the association and pensioners of Ghana Telecom.

He reminded the management of Vodafone that it was through the toil and sacrifices of the pensioners of the defunct Post and Telecommunications Corporation that sustained the company to attract its investment of 70 per cent shares.

Mr Tagoe, however, thanked Ghana Post for its unflinching support to the association.
