Six metrology laboratories at the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) have received certification from German accreditation body, Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle, popularly known as DAkkS.

The accreditation ensures that GSA laboratories that specialize in the measurement of mass, temperature, humidity, pressure as well as volume, receive recognition at the international level.

DAkkS officially handed over accreditation certificates to the management of GSA at a ceremony Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at the Standards Heights building in Accra.

Director General of the GSA, Professor Alexander Nii Dodoo lauded DAkkS for the initiative, emphasizing the relevance of metrology in government’s agenda for rapid industrialization.

He held the assertion that the “ability to measure, count or weigh anything we do will be critical” in the country’s trading interactions with the international community.

Speaking at the event, German Ambassador to Ghana, H. E. Christoph Retzlaff reiterated Germany’s undying dedication and support to President Akufo-Addo’s ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ agenda.

“We support Ghana on its way to a Ghana Beyond Aid. We have heard the President’s vision and we are convinced that Ghana is on the right path and we agree that this path requires private sector development,” Ambassador Retzlaff disclosed.

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kojo Kyeremanten as well as representatives from DAkkS and PTB, the National Metrology Institute of Germany, were present at the handing over ceremony.

Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH (DAkkS) is the national accreditation body for the Federal Republic of Germany, legally responsible for the accreditation of conformity assessment bodies such as laboratories, inspection and certification bodies. It started operating on January 1, 2010.
