'Ghana's economy will surprise the world this year' – Finance minister declares

Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has boldly declared that Ghana's economy is poised to experience a robust rebound this year.

According to him, the economy, which has been faced with severe challenges in recent years, is on the verge of growing faster than previously projected.

"This year, our economy is going to surprise the world.

"I can tell you that this economy is rebounding strongly. We are rebounding strongly, and it is surprising the world, even the IMF, the World Bank. They are all surprised. Last year, they projected our economy would grow at 1.5%, but we grew at 2.9%. In the first quarter of this year, they projected we would grow at 3.1%, but we grew at 4.7%," Dr. Amin Adam said during a Town Hall meeting held in the UK over the weekend.

He further stated, "This economy will grow, and it will grow faster than everyone thinks."

The finance minister also declared that the Ghana cedi will make a comeback against the United States dollar, following the persistent depreciation of the local currency against other major trading currencies.

The local currency has depreciated by 20.1% so far in 2024, ranking as the fourth worst-performing currency among the top 150 currencies tracked by Bloomberg.

The cedi is currently selling for around GH¢15.50 at major forex bureaus in the country.
