The Director of the Centre for Asian Studies (CAS), Lloyd Amoah, has complained bitterly about the rise in the sale of farms to galamseyers at the expense of Ghana’s cocoa.

Making his point in a post shared via social media, Lloyd Amoah indicated that Ghana could have made a lot of gains with its cocoa, considering the impact it has had on cocoa products across the globe.

However, due to the parochial interest of some people, especially the political elites, Ghana has had to suffer a decline in cocoa production.

He said, “The cocoa we gave the world and what it could have done. Changi Airport all things cocoa joint. Sadly we are throwing it away for the poisoned short-term gains of galamsey."

His position was backed by H. Kwasi Prempeh, Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), who said, “Small footnote: There are no gains to the nation, short or long term, from galamsey. It is an unmitigated disaster. The ‘short-term gains’ are entirely to the pillagers and their principals.”
