An economist, Professor Godfred Alufar Bokpin, has weighed in on the debate over whether the country needs a reset in leadership or merely an upgrade.
According to the Professor of Finance at the University of Ghana Business School, Ghana is currently experiencing a crisis that requires more than just an improvement but a reset.
Speaking on the Morning Starr show with Naa Dedei Tettey on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, Prof. Godfred Bokpin stressed that Ghana’s entire economy needs resetting.
“When I put all these things together, I tend to lean towards the statement that Ghana needs a reset… We have to start from 2025. We have to put credible leadership on the table,” he said.
Commenting on a series of rants by US-based Ghanaian actor Michael Blackson, who expressed frustration over losing his investments in Ghana, Prof. Bokpin criticized the Akufo-Addo government for overseeing the current economic mess, which has resulted in both foreign and local investors losing their savings.
“It’s quite painful. Do you know what some people might be telling their children and grandchildren right now in Ghana? They might be warning them to be wary of the Ghanaian government because of what the parents have gone through.”
“We have to develop a long-term plan that we demonstrate to investors and Ghanaians, both here and abroad, that we will follow through and pay the price… Otherwise, it is very difficult to see a sustainable way out of this,” he stressed.
