Glo Ghana bags two honours at Telco Awards

Glo Mobile Ghana, the Ghanaian subsidiary of Globacom Limited, the African telecommunications giant and the youngest network on Ghana’s telecoms market, on Friday was adjudged the Fastest Growing Telecommunications Network in the country at the 3rd edition of the Ghana Telecoms Awards (GTA).

Glo Mobile Ghana also picked up the prestigious award for the Most Innovative Product of the Year 2012 bringing its last quarter introduction of the ‘Glo Biiiig 5’ promo into focus.

Glo entered the Ghana market as the sixth telecom operator and began commercial business on April 29th 2012, at a time when market watchers and all the experts considered Ghana’s telecoms sector as being overly saturated and without any room for a new player. The company took its chances, and with determination and customer-centric offerings, has succeeded in wrenching an enviable chunk of the market for itself.

Ahead of its launch, Glo Mobile Ghana had successfully reserved 1.7 numbers for subscription, and in the span of just 90 days following commencement of operations had registered over 1,000000 million active subscribers according to NCA records.

This unprecedented feat was achieved notwithstanding the new SIM Card registration regulation which disallows instant subscription by customers as prevailed before 2012. The closest any Telco comes to this record of growth was in 2008 when the then Zain made a post-launch acquisition of 750,000 subscribers.

Glo Mobile Ghana has grown steadily since it launched 14 months ago and as at the close of April was listed by the NCA as commanding an active subscriber base of 2.47 million.

The award-winning ‘Glo Biiiig 5’ product on the other hand, is an innovative tariff plan on which all Glo customers instantly receive five times usage credit for the value of every respective recharge made.

When a subscriber loads GHC1 credit on his Glo line, he is automatically and immediately credited with GHC 5 worth of credit and with the additional credit the customer can call any network in Ghana, send SMS’s and browse the internet. In addition, customers can enjoy extra browsing time online with bonus credit earned on Biiiiig 5.

When he mounted the podium to receive the coveted award, Dhirendra Surve, Head of Marketing at Glo Mobile Ghana, said his company and the entire Management and staff of Glo are proud and grateful for the honour of recognition for the effort Glo is putting into its bid to deliver optimum network experience and satisfaction for its customers.

‘Since the essence of such recognition is to encourage us to achieve more, we at Glo assure you that we will work even harder to exceed the expectations of our cherished customers and the general public,’ said Dhirendra.

Organized by the United Kingdom-based Mobile World Magazine, the annual Ghana Telecom Awards (GTA) is the biggest platform for celebrating and recognizing excellence and achievement in Ghana’s telecommunications sector.

Other award winners for the night are were Fidelity Bank ( Best Bank in ICT Innovations), Ericsson (Telecom Vendor of the Year), Samsung S III was adjudged Smartphone of the Year, ZIPNet Business won Enterprise Network and Internet Solution Provider, African Telecom Personality of the Year went to Funke Opeke, CEO of Main One, etc.
