Government to construct two ports

Two ports, two container ships and 18 landing sites will be constructed as part of the Eastern Corridor Multi-modal Transport project.

One of the ports will be sited at Akosombo while the other will be situated at Buipe or Yapei in the north.

Government, on Monday, signed 314 million dollars with the Chinese contractor, China Shipbuilding and Offshore Company International to pave way for the project to start in November this year.

The funds are being made available under the China Development Bank loan.

The Managing Director of the Volta Lake Transport Company, Eric Kweku Yarboi explained to XYZ Business the project will create two ports at Akosombo and Yapei or Buipe in the north whilst two container ships are built.

The Transport Minister, Madam Dzifa Attivor for her part, said government is committed to extending development to every part of the country.

“As a social democratic party, our concern is with the people who live in the hinterland; we want to make sure development gets to all parts of the country,” she said. “This is why we are working on this project to improve on the services on the Volta Lake”.

The project is expected to be completed in 2017.
