Former Presidential Candidate Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom has stated that he believes President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo regrets his decision to appoint his own cousin as Minister for Finance in his government.

According to Dr. Nduom, while the president trusted Ken Ofori-Atta with Ghana’s economy on the basis of his support for his presidential campaign and his background as a financial analyst, Ken Ofori-Atta woefully failed in the discharge of his duty.

“He is the one the President trusted to raise money for his campaigns, and then when they won power, they entrusted him with running the economy. This has proven the old saying that it’s not necessarily those who help bring you to power who will make you successful once you get there,” he claimed.

“I believe the President has regretted the decision to place our economy in the hands of the investment analyst who became Finance Minister, Mr. Ofori-Atta,” he stated during a Facebook live video.

Dr. Nduom, the founder and president of Group Nduom, also claimed that during his tenure, the former Minister for Finance set the nation’s economy “on the path of destruction.”

He called for accountability on the part of persons entrusted with the nation’s economy for their various roles in Ghana’s current economic challenges.

President Akufo-Addo replaced Ken Ofori-Atta in February 2024, following months of public demand for the sacking of the former minister.

Mr. Ofori-Atta was largely blamed for Ghana’s economic challenges and was openly called out by even members of the New Patriotic Party.

However, Mr. Ofori-Atta and others in his defense have cited the impact of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war as key external factors that led to Ghana’s economic crunch.
