Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated that he's committed to abolishing betting tax and the Electronic Levy (E-Levy) if elected in the upcoming 2024 national elections.

Speaking at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth Townhall Meeting in Accra, Mahama outlined his vision for addressing key economic issues that have been a burden on Ghanaians.

Mahama criticized the E-Levy, a tax on electronic transactions, stating that it has failed to meet revenue expectations while placing unnecessary financial pressure on citizens.

He emphasized that his administration would explore alternatives to the betting tax, which has been a point of contention among the youth.

“You can also be assured that we will abolish the e-levy, remove the COVID Levy, and scrap the betting tax. I urge you to stand with us, stand for your dreams, and stand for a better Ghana.

“Together, we can build the Ghana we want, where every young Ghanaian can succeed.
With these policy proposals, I invite Ghana’s youth to partner with Naana Jane and me in our shared commitment to restoring the nation’s potential for future generations,” he said.

Mahama highlighted the need for a more streamlined process for exporting local talent abroad.

He expressed concern over the current state of professionals leaving Ghana due to unfavorable economic conditions, calling for a system that better supports the country's human capital.
