President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has accepted the resignation of Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh effective Thursday, July 18, 2024.

The decision to resign, according to the Energy Minister in a letter dated July 11, 2024, comes on the back of the need to step down from his role to concentrate on the new role and honor bestowed on him as Vice-Presidential Candidate of the NPP and the responsibilities thereof.

“I have come to the difficult decision to step down from my role in order to concentrate on the new role and honor bestowed on me,” the Energy minister said in the resignation letter.

He continued, “I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as both Minister for Education and Minister for Energy.”

In a response letter from the Office of the President, it noted “In the circumstances, I accept your resignation as I know that you are going to play another vital role in the fortunes of our party, the New Patriotic Party.”

“I want to express my profound gratitude and appreciation for the exemplary work you have done in my government, both as Minister for Education and Minister for Energy. I wish you God’s blessings in all your future endeavors."

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as 'NAPO,' was recently nominated by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the ruling NPP, as his running mate, a choice which received the unanimous endorsement of the party's National Executive Council.

His official unveiling by the party was held in Kumasi on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
