IFRIG honours Prof. Gatsi for leadership in non-interest finance advocacy

The Islamic Finance Research Institute of Ghana (IFRIG) has honoured Prof John Gartchie Gatsi, “for his outstanding contributions in the field on finance and his dedication to advancing knowledge in non-interest finance.”

A Citation of Honour was presented to Prof Gatsi at the end of the 2024 edition of IFRIG’s flagship programme, the Islamic Finance International Conference (IFIC) on October 5, 2024.

The event that took place at the Omanye Aba Hall of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) was on the theme ‘Should economies take advantage of non-interest banking?’

The presentation of the citation was done after the end of the plenary session of the 2024 IFIC by IFRIG board chairman, Alhaji Mohammed Awal Ismail.

Potions of the citation read in part: “His exemplary work and commitment to academic excellence have significantly impacted the financial landscape in Ghana and beyond. We appreciate his efforts in promoting ethical financial practices and fostering sustainable development through innovative solutions.”

In brief comments after receiving the citation, Prof Gatsi said he was honoured by the gesture and would continue to work with IFRIG and other stakeholders in ensuring the realization of non-interest banking and ethical finance modules.

He becomes the second IFRIG board member to be honoured with a citation. The first was presented to Mallam Attahiru Maccido during the 2022 IFIC at the GNAT Hall in Accra.



About Prof John Gatsi

He joined the University of Cape Coast in 2007 as a lecturer in the then Department of Accounting and Finance. He became the first Head of Department of the newly created Department of Finance from August 2016 to July 2019.

Prof. John Gartchie Gatsi is currently the Dean of the School of Business. He strongly believes in intellectual diversity and is able to apply his expertise in diverse disciplines such as financial and economic management, governance, financial industry regulation and oil and gas.

Prof. Gatsi has expertise in finance, financial economics, Islamic Finance, regulatory management, oil and gas management and law. He has published several articles in internationally reputable peer reviewed journals. He is the current chair of the panel who evaluates submissions by members of Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists with sponsorship from the World Bank from 2018.
