Illegal miners encroach on BGL's pit

Prestea (W/R), June 2, GNA- A number of galamsey operator's have extended their mining activities into a pit belonging to the Bogoso Gold Limited (BGL) at Prestea.

In addition to entering into the pit to collect ore, a hole suspected to have been created by the operators was also found in a rock where blasting was to be carried out.

Consequently, blasting was suspended on Wednesday with the fear that there might be loss of lives.

Mr Philip Davies, Mine Manager, BGL, announced this to the press at Prestea on Wednesday, following a tour of the pit by newsmen to witness the activities of the galamsey operators.

He said "there is the risk of these illegal operators losing their lives as it is difficult to determine the presence of human beings underground during blasting".

Mr Davies said although the delay was at a cost to BGL as it affected the company's production schedule, the company would continue to operate and comply strictly with the regulations governing mining companies in the country.

He entreated all unauthorized persons to stay away from the pit to avert any unwanted incident for which BGL would not be held responsible. Mr Davies, however, said BGL would continue to build upon its relationship with the Prestea community for the benefit of all.
