Newmont Ghana announces with deep regret that a fatal accident occurred at its Akyem Mine late on 26 March and that an investigation into the causes of the accident is underway.
“On behalf of all Newmont, we extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the family, and share in their grief at this extremely difficult time,” said Dave Schummer, Regional Senior Vice President, Africa Operations. “Our priorities are to support the deceased’s family, friends and co-workers during this time of unimaginable loss, while also investigating the causes of this tragic accident."
Newmont Ghana has notified the family and relevant authorities and says its paramount priority remains the safety of its employees, contractors and communities.
The scene of the accident has been secured and related operations halted. The company is closely working with the Mine Inspectorate Division and the District Police Service to thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident and put in place remedial measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
