Labour laws not for public sector alone-NLC

Ho, Oct. 29, GNA-Mr Kwesi Danso-Acheampong, Deputy Chairperson of the National Labour Commission (NLC) at the weekend said the country's labour laws were not meant for workers in the public sector alone. He said the laws also governed all labour transactions in the private sector, even in the remotest village of the country. Mr Danso-Acheampong was speaking to Journalists after closing a three-day training session for 72 core staff of the Information Services Department (ISD) from the Greater/Accra, Eastern, Western and Volta regions in Ho.

He said the Information Officers were expected to imbibe the tenets of the law and use the skills and resources of publicity available to them to educate workers and employers in their various areas Mr Danso-Acheampong said the NLC was aware that relations between workers in the informal sector in the district were often not based on any laws.

He said these workers were hardly paid the minimum wage, enjoyed no holidays, social security payments and were fired at will. Mr Danso-Acheampong said the NLC would use every means available to it to "spread the news" about the rights and duties of workers and employers to ensure harmonious industrial atmosphere in the country. He said peace on workers front in the country was necessary for increasing productivity and higher investment from within and without. Mr Danso-Acheampong called on workers to allow the labour laws to work to enable those with the capacity to create jobs to do so.
