Labour unions should set up a “strike fund” - NPP Guru

NPP staunch member, Kwabena Sarpong, says government should not remunerate public sector workers who embark on strike actions.

Speaking on Oman FM, he explained that it would be unfair for the workers to demand salaries for the days they go on strike.

Though expressing his support for Labour Unions in the country to go on strike, he however does not think they should burden the government or their employers with demands for payment of salaries.

“It is not fair for us to withdraw our service and implore our employer to pay us. It is not fair and we shouldn’t do it…Right now, if the government becomes embolden and decides not to pay you; nobody can compel the government.”

He therefore advised the Trade Union Congress to establish a 'strike fund' through which they will pay the striking workers.

“As much as I support you in going on strike, we should not be paid for going on strike. The Trade Union Congress must get this into its administration. The union dues that you contribute; put some aside that you’ll call it strike fund, so you can use it to pay your workers when you go on strike.” he stated.

Meanwhile, Labour groups under the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are gearing up to embark on a nationwide strike on Monday, November 18, 2013.
