MTN cautions customers against fraudsters

The management of Mobile Telecommunication Network, (MTN) Ghana, has urged its customers to be on the alert for fraudsters out there sending fake text messages on mobile money awards to bait and swindle them.

It said it had come to the company’s notice that some customers in the Northern Business Sector have been receiving messages informing them of having won huge sums of money through the MTN Mobile Money Raffle.

This would come with an invitation to them to buy certain amount of credit scratch cards and text the card numbers to a given MTN mobile number.

Mr Stephen Asare, the sector’s officer in-charge of Mobile Money, said all should be clear-eyed to avoid falling for the trick.

He stated that they had not launched any raffle in respect of mobile money service for the Northern Sector, therefore, any text message to the contrary should not only be ignored but reported to the nearest office of the company.

He told a press conference in Kumasi that MTN, being a responsible corporate body, would use the official line of communication to get to winners of any competition it organizes.

Mr Asare said they had taken steps towards tracking down the fraudsters to bring them to justice.

He counseled those involved in the unlawful act to stop in their own interest, warning that, they were never going to get away with their crime.
