MTN seeks local mobile apps

Mobile operator MTN Ghana has launched a challenge that is seeking to encourage the development of relevant local-theme mobile platform applications.

“The MTN Apps Challenge will provide an opportunity for the company to engage local developers in providing unique, relevant and user-friendly apps that will be relevant for local users in Africa,” Abdul-Latif Issahaku, Innovations Manager at MTN Ghana said.

In recent years, mobile apps stores have gained considerable attention and are emerging as an important channel for the distribution of mobile content.

Although these stores offer thousands of mobile apps for Android, Apple, Windows and Blackberry platforms, the majority of apps are not developed with a local appeal.

According to Mr. Issahaku, as a market leader MTN -- which has 65% of the data market share -- is seeking to further expand its data market by leveraging on the provision of relevant local mobile apps.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that we explore innovative technological solutions that will enable Ghanaians to boldly enter the digital world with solutions that meet their communications needs.

“Not only does MTN harness local talent in application development and build strong affinity with the developer community, but we also create the opportunity for developers to market their content via MTN platforms. In doing so, we fulfil our promise to deliver innovative service in Ghana.”

The competition, which will end on September 30, is open to all individual and app development organizations, and is targetted at encouraging the growth of innovative applications with local themes that suit the Ghanaian market.

“The apps that will be developed will help support the country’s national development by creating user-friendly ICT solutions for individuals and businesses,” Mr. Issahaku.

The competition is open to all individual and app development organisations, and it is expected to encourage the growth of innovative applications with local themes that suit the Ghanaian market.

The contest will run for six weeks and applicants will be judged on the uniqueness, relevance and user-friendliness of their applications on the Ghanaian market.

Apart from the winners being given cash prizes, the apps will be featured on the local app store on MTNPlay platform.
