MTN to support education and health programmes

Ho, Sept 24, GNA - MTN Ghana, is seeking to affect many Ghanaians by selecting projects for support, under its social responsibility policy. The projects, according to a release by the MTN Ghana Foundation, the corporate wing of MTN Ghana, should have significant impact on the lives of Ghanaians.

Projects listed to be receiving support since the launch of the Foundation in 2007, include MTN/UNDP ICT centres, "under which 10 ICT centres are being built in each region in the country". It said another "MTN sponsored project underway in Tamale is the MTN/AED education programme, aimed at increasing literacy and numeracy in primary schools in the Northern Region to impact the lives of over 10,000 pupils".

The release said the Foundation's area of support was in education and health, and had refurbished and commissioned the maternity ward of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and is also supporting the construction of an intensive care unit of the Princess Marie Louis Hospital, the only children's hospital in Ghana. Under education, it said, the Foundation recently gave a cheque of GH¢ 9,311.00 toward the construction of a school project for the Sefwi-Abono Primary School in Juaboso District in the Western Region. The release said the American Embassy in Ghana was also involved in that project which should "give a new lease to teaching and learning there".

MTN Foundation has invested about $2,000,000 in Socio-economic development projects in the country since it was launched, the release said.
