Accra, Sept 8, GNA - The people of Arigu and Walewale have appealed to the government to re-activate the Pwalugu Tomato Factory to save tons of tomatoes that go rotten as a result of lack of storage facilities. The Arigu-Walewale Youth Association that made the appeal in Accra at its meeting over the weekend said farmers find it difficult to cart tomatoes to Kumasi and Accra.
Therefore, reactivation of the factory would save their produce from going bad.
Other major crops produced in the area are watermelon, beans, maize, groundnut as well as dawadawa, shea butter and kapok. Speaking at the event Mr Osuamanu Abugbila, Assemblyman for the area, appealed to the government and non-governmental organizations to help the people to rehabilitate an unused old school building into a clinic.
He said the rehabilitation is expected to cost about 100 million cedis and when completed would serve the people of Maryea, Chariba and Dooh.
Mr Abugbila appealed to the government to construct mini dams for year-round cultivation, to rehabilitate the five-kilometre road linking the communities to Pwalugu and a Senior Secondary School.
