Fast-food restaurant Marwako has been ordered to pay over GH¢1 million in damages to plaintiffs who were victims of a food poisoning incident in 2022.
The plaintiffs, who are siblings, contended that they experienced food poisoning exhibited through abdominal pains and severe vomiting leading to diarrhea after purchasing food from the restaurant.
According to the Court, Marwako sold contaminated food with pathogens to some 598 customers at its East Legon branch on May 8, 2022.
Subsequently, some of these customers sued the company for damages regarding the contamination.
Despite initial efforts by the company to address the matter privately, the Court has ruled that damages be paid to plaintiffs Winifred Tse, Rodger Bismark Tse, and Walter Tse, who have each been awarded an amount of GH¢345,000 as general damages.
They will also jointly receive special damages of GH¢25,215.48 from Marwako.
In addition to the ruling, the Court has awarded GH¢10,000 against the Defendant for the Plaintiffs' legal representation costs and overall litigation expenses for the period.
The ruling comes after Marwako was found guilty of the food contamination incident, which sparked widespread anger and condemnation on social media on May 8, 2022.
