This year’s Farmers’ Day celebration will be full of surprises as government is set to unveil plans for the revamp of the agricultural sector and life-changing packages for farmers in the coming year.

The national celebration of the 2019 Farmers’ Day, scheduled for December 7, 2018 at Tamale in the Northern Region is themed “Agriculture, Moving Ghana Beyond aid”.

The event will recognise hardworking regional and national best farmers and also serve as a platform for government to outline efforts toward the further enhancement of agricultural productivity and its rewards to farmers in 2019 and 2020.

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah explained that the theme reiterates government’s commitment to promoting agriculture in the country.

He said, “The theme reflects the premium placed on agriculture by the Administration and the critical role of the sector and sector players in Ghana’s ability to meet our beyond aid goal.”

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah added that the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) programme, which was introduced in 2017, will be expanded in 2019 to boost agricultural productivity nationwide.

“In 2019, the programme is to be expanded further. We want to expand the number of farmers, the kinds of input we make available to farmers, the agric products that these programmes cover, the markets that our farmers can reach, particularly international markets,” he disclosed.
