Accra, Aug. 2, GNA - Newmont Ghana Gold Limited has promised pursuing advanced technology and high industry practices to ensure peaceful co-existence with communities in its operational areas. A statement issued in Accra on Tuesday said the Company was working in consonance with laid down environmental and technical reviews on the Ahafo Project. The technical environmental review was requested by the Board of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank prior to final approval of an IFC financing.
Newmont said risk-based issues highlighted in the technical review would require ongoing monitoring and analysis. It said that information and knowledge gained during the evolution of the project would be used to test out understanding and evaluation of performance and ensure that appropriate risk management practices were in place.
Newmont said it was committed to conducting its operations in Ghana in accordance with international best practice and leadership in environmental management. The Company promised public participation in the monitoring of its activities saying that it intended to discuss the modalities for this with the Ahafo Social Responsibility Forum, which had been active since January 2006.
