Newmont Ghana Gold Limited (NGGL) and the Ghana Mineworkers Union (GMWU) have resumed negotiations on staff salary and collective bargaining agreements.
The parties’ decision to return to the negotiation table on conditions of service followed a recent threat of industrial strike by the GMWU.
“We recognise that embarking on a strike will not be in the best interest of both parties and other stakeholders”, a statement jointly signed by Pascal Kanbonnabah, Regional Vice President, Human Resources of the NGGL and Mr Prince William Ankrah, the General Secretary of the GMWU said.
A copy of the statement made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Friday in Sunyani said “the GMWU has therefore withdrawn its decision to embark on strike and is focusing on reaching settlement on the on-going wage and salary negotiations”.
According to the statement, both parties had reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating to preserve conducive work environment to ensure the long-term sustainability of the business and the jobs, incomes and other broader benefits the business provided.
It expressed appreciation to the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations and the National Labour Commission for their roles in facilitating a speedy resolution of the differences between the two parties.
“Negotiating a mutually acceptable agreement that provides fair and equitable wage and salary adjustments for employees has to be done in the context of the current challenged gold mining and economic environment,” it said
