Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced that a future NDC government would review the Customs Amendment Act, 2020 (Act 1014) concerning the importation of salvaged vehicles.
Mahama made this announcement on Saturday during the manifesto launch of the NDC in Winneba, Central Region.
The Customs Amendment Act, 2020, which came into force in April 2020, was designed to provide incentives for automotive manufacturers and assemblers registered under the Ghana Automotive Manufacturing Development Programme, offer import exemptions for security agencies and their officers, and address related matters. The Act amended Section 58 of Act 891 to, among other things, prevent the importation of salvaged motor vehicles and vehicles older than 10 years.
Mahama stated that the Act would be reviewed to allow individuals who cannot afford new vehicles to purchase salvaged ones. He emphasized that this review would also provide work for artisans, who could repair these salvaged cars. He mentioned that this support would benefit areas known for auto repairs, such as Kokompe, Abossey Okai, and Kumasi Magazine.
