Nigeria resumes gas supply to Ghana

Nigeria has finally resumed gas supply to Ghana.

XYZ Business has learnt that the West African Gas Pipeline Company resumed supplies on Monday July 8, 2013.

However, Ghana is yet to get the expected volumes for power generation.

The Nigerian gas is expected to reduce the power supply deficit and end the ongoing load shedding.

Communication Specialist at the Energy Ministry, Edward Bawa, confirmed the resumption of gas flow to XYZ Business.

He said: “As I speak to you the gas has started flowing but at very low volumes. You know it takes a period of time before it gets to the actual volumes. So at the close of the day I will have to cross check with Volta River Authority to know the actual figures. We do have the gas flowing, it started yesterday”.

Managers of private power producer, Sunon Asogli say they are ready to start production once Nigeria resumes gas supply this week.

The 200 Megawatt plant has been shut down since gas supply was interrupted in August last year.

Sunon Asogli has lost about US$30m since gas supply to Ghana got cut.

Its Chairman Togbe Afede said the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission must approve the company’s request for a review of tariffs to recover its losses.
