The Adza-ma family of Ho Bankoe, owners of the Ho Central market land, on Tuesday asked the Municipal Assembly to consult the family for a mutual agreement on the land.
Mr Komla Anyomi, head of the family made the call when he briefed journalists in Ho over a stalemate in negotiations between the family and Assembly concerning the review of the rent on the land.
Mr Anyomi said the Adza-ma family was not against the development of the market but might be compelled to seek an injunction on it “unless the right thing is done.”
On Wednesday May 7, Vice-President John Mahama was in Ho to launch the Ghana Urban Management Pilot (GUMP) project under which the Ho Central Market would be rebuilt into a state-of-the-art facility.
Mr Anyomi said the land covering 12.083 acres was leased to then Ho Local Council in 1960 for 99 years at eight pounds a month to be reviewed every 15 years which had not been done.
He said in 2007, the Assembly agreed on a monthly rent of GH¢100.00 which was raised to GH¢300.00 in 2010 as a stop gap measure pending negotiations to review of the rent.
Mr Anyomi said since 2010 when the family sent a proposal to the Assembly for negotiations to review the agreement, the Assembly failed to act in good faith.
Mr Isaac Kodobisah, Ho Municipal Chief Executive told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that, the Assembly was ready to negotiate with the family to reach a mutually beneficial agreement if they withdrew the matter from Court.
He said the Assembly would not risk being charged with contempt for negotiating a matter which was pending in Court.
Mr Kodobisah said the Assembly had demonstrated goodwill towards the Adza-ma family and was prepared to reach a mutually beneficial agreement with them for the development of the market.
He said he was hopeful that the Adza-ma family would not do anything to deny the municipality and the region the opportunity to raise the profile of the Central Market.**
