Patronage of made in Ghana products and services are on the increase in the Volta Region within the past four years.
Mr Lambert Y.A.K. Amewu, Regional Officer of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI) noted at a regional ‘MOTI and Agencies’ meeting held in Ho.
He said following the launching of ‘everyday wear’ in 2011, many more people had developed interest for local fabrics, which had created huge demand for the product.
Mr Amewu said a study by his outfit shows that, a good number of schools, private and public institutions, in the region were now using local fabrics every day.
He said the high demand was creating jobs for dealers, dressmakers and producers of the fabric.
“This sector is creating a lot of jobs. Demand is high. That is why almost every shop, including supermarkets and provision shops are also selling these products,” Mr Amewu said.
He said the kente cloth, continued to attract both local and foreign tourists to the region, which was also helping to expand the local economy.
He said the high demand for local products had generated interest of players in the sector in trade fairs, evident in their patronage of such events in the region.
Mr Amewu said despite the energy challenge facing the nation, small and medium scale enterprises were doing well with support from the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) and the Export Trade, Agricultural and Industrial Development Fund (EDAIF).
