The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has said poor access to the internet in some parts of the Ashanti Region has hampered the installation of smart prepaid meters.

According to the Public Relations Officer of ECG in the Ashanti West Region, Benjamin Antwi, most smart prepaid meters require a strong internet connection to function well.

"It will take strong internet for customers to use smart prepaid meters; hence, ECG had to ensure all areas installed with the new meters had access to good internet service for smooth usage," he said.

He said this during an exclusive interview with Captain Koda on the Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM's morning show Nyansapo.

Benjamin Antwi, during the interview on Monday, June 3, 2024, said ECG aims to replace all postpaid and prepaid meters that use cards with smart prepaid meters to improve energy accounting and convenience.

"With smart prepaid meters, a customer can buy credits for their meters from the convenience of their homes by downloading the ECG power app," he said.

He added that the replacement was part of ECG's Loss Reduction Program, stressing that the company is working towards reducing revenue losses with the introduction of smart prepaid meters.

Benjamin Antwi underscored the company's commitment to meeting service connection requests in the region.

He noted that the Loss Reduction Program would ensure the availability of smart prepaid meters to meet service connection requests and reduce system losses.
