The Mortuary Workers Association has threatened to strike on Thursday, November 28, 2024, to demand better conditions of service.

Association leaders have since instructed members in both public and private facilities to shut down all mortuaries until further notice.

The Association cited employers' neglect of their needs as the reason for the strike.

Concerns raised include the need for better wages, a safer working environment, and the provision of essential personal protective equipment (PPE).

In a statement sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the Mortuary Workers Association stated, “We are writing to inform you that, due to the lack of practical will to reach a complete resolution of issues affecting Mortuary Workers in Ghana, we intend to resume our STRIKE ACTION, which has been in abeyance since Thursday, September 26, 2024.”

The statement continued, “Despite our efforts to reach a mutually acceptable end, the issues that led to the initial strike action remain unresolved. We have been left with no choice but to take this decision to protect the interests of our members.”

They emphasised that without proper equipment, their members face significant risks in their daily work and also requested financial clearance for the recruitment of 500 new mortuary workers to ease the workload on current staff.

The workers however say they are hopeful that the government will engage in a constructive dialogue with them and address their concerns.
