The Director General of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), Professor Samuel Boakye Dampare has emphasized the critical role of radiation protection in addressing needs in key fields such as medicine, industry, agriculture, telecommunications, archaeology, space exploration, law enforcement, and geological resource prospecting.

While acknowledging the significant benefits of radiation for socio-economic development, he also highlighted the importance of addressing its potential hazards to humans and the environment.

Speaking at an event to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Commission, Professor Dampare stressed that the Radiation Protection Institute (RPI) of GAEC will continue to play a pivotal role in ensuring radiation safety and nuclear security in Ghana.

He emphasized the institute's role in protecting human health and the environment from the hazards of radiation use.

“The invaluable role of the Radiation Protection Institute (RPI) of GAEC cannot be over-emphasised as it was established to ensure protection of human health and the environment from any potential hazards of radiation use,” he said.

Professor Dampare pointed out that the RPI serves as the cornerstone and foundation of the national radiation protection framework and will continue to protect Occupationally Exposed Workers (OEWs), the public, and the environment.

“The RPI has long served as the cornerstone and foundation of our national radiation protection framework,” Prof. Dampare said.

He called for collective collaboration and commitment from relevant stakeholders to enhance security in the country, urging industry and medical partners to uphold the highest safety standards, comply with regulatory requirements, and prioritize continuous staff training.

The GAEC is celebrating its 60th anniversary under the theme; “60 Years of Impacting Society through Nuclear Science and Technology - Expanding our Frontiers,”.

The milestone seeks to reflect its commitment to promoting the peaceful utilization of nuclear science and technology in Ghana.

Professor Dampare expressed the Commission's dedication to providing support for mutually beneficial cooperation and encouraged more collaboration among industry and stakeholders in the nuclear energy space.
