A former Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumbungu, Abdulai Mohammed Mubarak, popularly known as Ras Mubarak, has sued Scancom PLC, the parent company of MTN Ghana, for denying him roaming services while he was outside Ghana.

According to the former lawmaker, MTN has provided roaming services, including prepaid and postpaid options, whenever he travels abroad over the past 20 years.

In a writ, the former MP stated that he has "heavily relied" on MTN's internet service for business activities during his travels. He explained that he typically activates MTN Ghana's roaming service on his mobile phone before leaving the country.

Ras Mubarak recalled that in September of this year, he activated the roaming service on his device before travelling to the United Arab Emirates.

However, upon arrival, he attempted to "access his mobile phone service multiple times without success."

This issue made it "impossible to receive calls, send or receive SMS messages, and access internet data services" during his stay.

He noted that despite lodging complaints with MTN Ghana to resolve the problem, all efforts proved futile, leaving him "stranded for an entire week without a mobile network connection."

He claimed that this failure "caused immeasurable damage" to his business, including the loss of business opportunities and severe reputational damage, as he could not contact his business associates or attend scheduled meetings.

Additionally, he said the issue negatively affected his family relationships, as he could not send money to his wives and children. This forced him to rely on loans from "employees and other associates" throughout his week in the Emirates.

Mubarak, who is demanding $5 million in compensation for the "loss of business opportunities, inconvenience, hardship, and embarrassment" caused by MTN Ghana's failure to resolve its network issues, stated that he suffered "severe emotional and psychological anguish" and "irreparable embarrassment" as a well-known public figure.

He has also requested that MTN Ghana cover any additional expenses incurred in his pursuit of justice.
