The Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA) has launched an initiative urging Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) nationwide to provide rebates on Business Operating Permits (BOPs) to businesses, encouraging the re-use of plastic bags.

This innovative approach aims to incentivize sustainable practices among retailers and reduce the environmental impact of single-use plastics. The proposed rebate system encourages businesses to adopt practices that minimize the consumption of single-use plastic bags.

Participating retailers would receive discounts on their Business Operating Permits (BOPs) based on the volume of plastic bags reused or the adoption of alternative eco-friendly packaging solutions.

The campaign, led by CLGA, emphasizes the importance of reducing plastic waste through proactive measures at the community level. By incentivizing businesses to encourage plastic bag reuse, MMDAs can play a pivotal role in promoting environmental sustainability.

The CLGA in a statement said it "believes that incentivizing businesses is a practical approach to achieving tangible results in plastic waste reduction. This support will not only help local businesses adopt sustainable practices but also contribute to creating cleaner and healthier communities."

"CLGA is certain that implementing rebates for plastic bag reuse will promote environmental conservation by reducing the production and disposal of single-use plastic bags. MMDAs can leverage this initiative to mitigate plastic pollution and its adverse effects on the environment," it added.

The Centre continued, "Furthermore, supporting businesses that prioritize sustainability can stimulate innovation in packaging solutions and create opportunities for green entrepreneurship, opening up the local economy for growth and development."

CLGA said it remains dedicated to advocating for sustainable practices and supporting initiatives that contribute to a cleaner, greener, and more resilient environment.

"By using incentives to promote plastic bag reuse, MMDAs have the opportunity to make a significant impact on waste reduction and environmental sustainability across communities nationwide," it concluded.
