Samsung brings healthcare to its mobile phone users

Leading mobile phone manufacturer, Samsung has introduced an innovative application aimed at bringing healthcare to the doorsteps of its users.

The application, Smart Health App, was introduced during the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear at the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 World Tour Africa in Cape Town, South Africa.

The application, which is preinstalled in all new Samsung devices - including the Galaxy Note 3 - and later available for other devices - according to the company will bring valuable medical information to users.

George Ferreira, Vice President and COO of Samsung Electronics Africa introducing Smart Health App said its introduction is part of efforts by the company to become a global healthcare leader.

“Samsung aims to become a global healthcare leader by bringing together its expertise in electronics and IT technologies for an improved and more complete healthcare experience. Today, we continue our momentum as we launch our Smart Health App - an evolution in mobile health,” he said.

The Smart Health App, George Ferreira disclosed, has been endorsed by the United Nation’s Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculoses (TB) and Malaria.

He said it will enable "consumers to not only educate themselves around these diseases, but to identify symptoms, high risk areas as well as precautionary measures and medication that can be taken when travelling into those areas in Africa."

Marc Koska, Founder and CEO of SafePoint Trust charity and LifeSaver, a company that introduced syringes which allow for only onetime usage, commended Samsung for the innovation.

He said, "I think innovations like this and our partnership with Samsung will help," solve some of the critical challenges facing healthcare in the world.
