Ranking member of Parliament’s finance committee, Casiel Ato Forson has asked Minister of Communications Ursula Owusu-Ekuful to drop the idea of taxing mobile money profits of telecommunications companies.
This comes after the Communications Minister urged the Minister of Finance and by extension, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to consider taxing the mobile network operators for all profits received from mobile money transactions which she claims is in the region of 80 million Ghana cedis monthly.
But the former deputy minister of finance, Ato Forson argues the move will amount to double taxation as the total profits of communication companies are already taxed.
He asked the minister to stay away from matters of taxation as it is not her strong area.
“I always said that she does not understand taxes so taxes are not for her,” he advised.
He was speaking to Nuong Faalong on TV3’s Hot Issues which airs Saturdays at 12:30.
The Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam Constituency in the Central Region said “I have always advised [Ursula] my friend that she should stay away from taxes because she has no clue. She should leave it to the Minister of Finance”.
