The Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has announced that the Tema to Mpakadan railway line will be completed by the end of the year.
Making this known on the floor of Parliament during the mid-year budget presentation, he said the project was 99% complete.
However, the Ministry of Railways Development had earlier said the reason for the delay was due to some obstacles hindering the operationalisation of the Tema-Mpakadan rail line.
The demarcated line’s proximity to the hydro dam raised concerns that necessary blasting could jeopardise the dam’s structural stability.
The construction of the Kojokrom-Manso section is also expected to be completed before the end of 2024.
On the Nsawam – Accra – Tema railway line, the finance minister noted that the project was complete and operational.
"The Nsawam – Accra – Tema railway line is completed and in use. The construction of the iconic Tema to Mpakadan railway line is 99 percent complete and is expected to be fully completed this year. The construction of the Kojokrom-Manso section is expected to be completed before the end of 2024," he said.
But the Manso-Huni Valley project, which includes the extension of the line into the Takoradi port, is expected to be completed by May 2026.
Dr. Amin Adam emphasised that the construction of these railway lines was not only about transportation but a move to foster economic growth, create jobs, and enhance connectivity throughout the country.
