The worst thing that can happen to a company is staff apathy, according to Elinam Horgle, Deputy Managing Director of J.K Horgle Transport Limited.
Elinam emphasized that for a company to thrive and appear healthy, it largely depends on how well the staff are treated.
“If they don’t care about your business, you’ll micro-manage and then you’ll die from stress. That’s what will happen. So, if you don’t invest in your staff, the salary and the reward… let’s not confuse the two. Some people will say, but I’m paying them; okay but they have come to work and they have done the job. If they’re not doing anything significant, your company won’t grow; you’ll be growing the business all the time; you will be the one driving the business because, for them, they only have a job but if they see that I go extra, I did extra, guess what will happen? They’ll be going extra. And who will benefit from going extra? The company,” she said.
She further advised employers not to be selfish if they truly want their businesses to grow.
She emphasized that employers should adopt the practice of rewarding employees who perform well.
This, she believes, will motivate others to work harder, inspired by the recognition and rewards given to their colleagues.
Elinam also advised employers to adopt the attitude of rewarding employees openly, rather than always doing so privately.
She said “So, inasmuch as possible as an employer, I will say that be selfish and in being selfish is that you want your business to grow and one of the things that will let your business grow is when your employees are performing, and the way your employees will perform is if they have a reward for performing. So, make sure that at any point in time….
“… And when you reward, don’t do it in private. You know some people like to do it in private like ‘take this for yourself’. That’s not what it is. Let the KPIs be set as well as the rewards. When the person does well, reward them so that the others will learn from this person that is doing well.”
