Water Company Engulfed In Debts

The Ghana Water Company Limited owes the Electricity Company of Ghana ?107.3 billion. The company is also servicing a ?3million loan obtained from Barclays Bank. The loan was for the construction of 13 glass fibre re-enforced plastic water reservoirs in the Accra and Tema Metropolis.

According to the Ashanti Regional Chief Manager of GWCL, Kenneth Baffoe Maison, the company spends ?2.2 billion on electricity, ?7.1 billon on personnel and ?5.3 billion on chemicals on monthly basis.

Mr Maison however assured workers of the company that management was taking pro-active measures to address the numerous operational and financial problems facing it. “Management is firmly committed to tackling the problem of illegal connections, reducing leakages and improving upon revenue collection”.
