Accra, (Greater Accra) 4 Nov., The Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation (GWSC) said today that it will purchase alum for the purification of drinking water from the Ghana Bauxite Company (GBC) if only it can be assured of their requirements regularly. Nii Boi Ayibotele, Acting Managing Director of GWSC, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra, that the price should be competitive and GBC should also be prepared to supply the product in good time. At the moment, GWSC spends 2.5 million dollars annually to import lump alum. Trial tests last year by GWSC and GBC at the Owabi head works in the Ashanti region showed that GBC is capable of producing liquid alum from bauxite to replace the lump alum GWSC imports. Mr. B.O. Adoo, Acting Managing Director of GBC, said feasibility studies on extraction of alum from bauxite has been completed. What the company is waiting for ''is an assurance from GWSC that it would be prepared to buy the liquid alum from the company.'' Mr. Addo said the final financial and technical feasibility reports for the establishment of the plant at Awaso would be implemented soon. He said the company which has been placed on divestiture is currently exploring for markets in the sub-region for the liquid alum.
