The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has threatened to go on strike if the government refuses to tackle the increasing illegal mining activities across the country.

As reported by 3news.com, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GPRTU, Alhaji Abass, called on the government to implement effective measures to combat this growing issue.

According to him, “If the government fails to take decisive action, we will have no choice but to embark on a strike.”

The GPRTU joins various other groups and bodies including labour groups, environmentalists, and concerned citizens who are demanding stricter measures from the government to address the escalating environmental crisis driven by galamsey.

Recently, the Coalition of Citizens Against Galamsey held a three-day protest against illegal mining.

The coalition petitioned the Attorney General’s office, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Speaker of Parliament regarding the galamsey menace.

They also demanded the release of 53 protesters who were arrested during the ‘Reoccupy Julorbi House’ protest against galamsey on September 22.
