Work to start on Bukom regeneration

Accra March 24, GNA - The Ministry of Tourism and Modernization of the Capital City on Thursday officially handed over to contractors a site to be developed into a recreational centre for tourists at Bukom Square.

Libation was poured at the site to signify the official start of work on the project.

Mr Philip Amankwah Yeboah, Manager of Philiyanco Limited, the Contractors for the project, did not state when actual work would start. The project, which is the first phase, would seek to regenerate the Bukom Square, by building a Hall of Fame where all renowned boxers from Bukom would have their profiles.

The Ministry would also rehabilitate the public place of convenience at Bukom and source loans for a deep freezer for the sale of coconut in the area.

Mr Kofi Asamoah Boateng, Finance and Administrative Director of the Ministry, said young men and women in the area would be recruited and trained as tour guides for tourists.

Mr Samuel Manakattah, Member of Parliament for the Odododiodio Constituency, said Ga Mashie was full of history and it was important that tourists shared the rich history.

He said though the regeneration of the Bukom Square was planned during Dr Kwame Nkrumah's presidency, the project had delayed and pleaded with the people to cooperate with the contractors. Nii Bi Ayi Bonte, Chairman for the occasion, asked the people to support the project.

The residents were, however, divided over the project. While some expressed happiness, others grumbled about the fact that the Bukom Square was the only open space left for trading, organising funerals and for playing games.
