World Bank contributes one million dollars to High Street Project

Accra, Jan. 16, GNA - The World Bank (WB) has contributed one million dollars (9.2 billion cedis) to the Accra Central Business District road rehabilitation projects, which took off on Monday, January 15, 2007.

Mr Kwesi Nuama, the Road Development Engineer at the Department of Urban Roads (DUR), told the Ghana News Agency that the amount was solely to pay for the services of the consultant for the project, Tahal Consulting Engineers from Israel and their Ghanaian partners Alpha Consulting. been released to the Consultant. However, Mr Nuama stated that the amount was released to the contractor, China Railways Wuju Group and not the Consultant.

Meanwhile work was feverishly underway when the GNA visited the main project site at the Lavender Hill, near Korle Gonno in Accra on Tuesday morning. The heavy traffic jams, which characterised the city of Accra, due to the blockage of the High Street on Monday, had eased considerably.

Mr Nuama told the GNA that the heavy traffic on Monday was also because the traffic direction from the construction site was wrong "but we have shown the right alternative routes to ensure smoother flow of traffic".
