Your job is secured under ECG-Meralco deal – Energy Minister

The Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko, has assured that all workers of ECG that will complete their transition from the state-owned utility company to Meralco will not suffer any job losses during the entire 20 year period of the agreement.

He assured them of job security stressing that their conditions of service shall remain intact or even an improved one since the government is pushing for that.

The Minister for Energy made this observation, Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at a press conference in Parliament moments after laying a Paper on the floor of the House.

The Paper was seeking for the consideration and approval of the House a Concession Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Ghana and the Consortium of investors led by the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) for private sector participation in the Electricity Company of Ghana with the terms of the Second Millennium Challenge Compact.

The Paper has been referred to the Committee on Mines and Energy for consideration and report to the House.

Mr. Agyarko commenting further revealed that under the deal, Meralco is bring onboard US$580m to revamp the operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana.

That aside, the American government is also committing an amount of US$498m to add up to what Meralco is bringing onboard.

He was optimistic that the deal, when approved by Parliament, will minimize if not totally eliminate the erratic power supply that hit the country a few years ago.
