Ghana Rugby Association launches PwC Women’s Tournament

Madam Gifty Anna Myers, President of the Ghana Rugby Association has called on the government of Ghana to support rugby to be popular in the country and help the Association to participate in international tournaments to be able to take part in the next Olympic Games.

Speaking at the launch of the 2013 Pricewaterhouse Coopers Women’s 7 Rugby Tournament at the Media Center of the Accra Sports Stadium, she said plans are advanced for more schools to play rugby so that the game catches up all over the country.

She expressed her gratitude to Pricewaterhouse Coopers for their ten year relationship with rugby and thanked them for sponsoring the girl’s tournament.

According to Gifty Anna Myers, the magic started in 2003 when Mr. Mark Appleby, a partner of PwC served on the board of the Ghana Rugby Association.

She said in 2005, PwC was a co-sponsor of Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) Under 18 Tournament hosted in Ghana at Obuasi and they also sponsored the Junior and Senior High Schools 15s Rugby League in 2007, 2008 and 2009 which saw PwC co- sponsoring the first CAR North – West Africa Women’s Tournament at El Wak Stadium in Accra.

The President of GRA hinted that PwC has sponsored the Women’s 7s Tournament ever since, and it gets better by the year. She said this year’s tournament has been split into two; the first will take on Saturday May 25 2013 at the Ajax Park in Legon, and the second at the Robert Mensah Stadium in Cape Coast later in the year.

She hoped that with the support of the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ghana will host an international event to showcase the women’s game properly.

The teams that will participate in the PwC Tournament are the University of Ghana, Spartans Club, Cosmos Ladies and Warrior Ladies.

She praised the media who have been supporting the development and promotion of rugby in Ghana such as sportsinghana.com, ghanaweb.com, Graphic Sports, Ghanaian Times, Metro TV, GTV, TV3, TV Africa and the various radio stations.
