One was shot while four suspected armed robbers were arrested by the Eastern Regional Police Command at Nsawam on morning.
The suspects aged between 17 and 25 years are alleged to be members of a robbery syndicate attacking and robbing travelers on the Nsawam stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway.
The Eastern Regional Police gave account of how ten different robberies were carried out by the five suspects over the past seven months.
Their names were given as Divine Zanu, 23, Benjamin Lodo, 17, Andrew Zanu, 25, and Mawuli Zanu, 24.
Their latest attack, according to the police, occurred Wednesday dawn when, in their modus operandi, they forcibly stopped one commercial vehicle.
A police officer on board engaged in a shootout with them, resulting in one getting wounded and being pronounced dead on arrival at the Nsawam Government Hospital.
The police tracked the others with information gathering intelligence, leading to the arrest of the other four.
Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) ASP Yaw Nketia-Yeboah cautioned motorists to avoid stopping at secluded areas on the stretch of road while advising drivers not to heed to unnecessary sound they hear on the road.
Nine unserviceable mobile phones, two masks and a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were found upon a search in the suspects’ house.
The robbers were said to have terrorized their victims robbing them of their valuables and wounding some in the process. They are behind a robbery attack on the Member of Parliament for Tain Constituency, according to the police.
The four suspects will be kept in police custody with the exhibits to assist in further investigation and processed for court.
