About 60 senior personnel of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) from the Volta and Eastern regions have undergone a day’s training on how to promptly check fake vehicle insurance.

The exercise under the nationwide trainer-of-trainers programme of the National Insurance Commission (NIC) was to build the capacity of the senior personnel so that they could, in turn, educate their colleagues on the Motor Insurance Database (MID.)

The MID is a centralised database which security agencies and the general public, including passengers of vehicles, can check the validity of vehicle insurance instantly through a mobile phone or quick response code to combat the menace of fake insurance stickers.

The Head of Supervision of the NIC, Mr Seth Eshun told the Ghanaian Times in an interview that the MID which was introduced by the NIC in January to help eliminate the phenomenon of fake insurance in the system had helped to check register about 100,000 vehicles in seven weeks.

“As of the evening of February 24, 2020, the database has recorded the insurance of over 101,000 vehicles,” he said.

Mr Eshun who took the senior personnel through the MID said the number of vehicles which had been insured this year was an indication that the general public and the insurance industry “have come to understand the benefits of digitising the insurance sector to rid the system of fraudsters.”

He disclosed that the training would be replicated in all the other regions of the country.

The Head of Operations of the Police MTTD, Superintendent Dr Sasu Mensah commended the NIC for introducing the MID.

He said the MID had made it easy for the MTTD personnel to check the insurance of vehicles promptly.

Superintendent Dr Sasu said the training had helped build the capacity of the senior police personal to also train their junior officers on the operations of the MID.
