The Ashanti Regional police command on Saturday, 25 November arrested eight students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for rioting and causing damage to a number of vehicles at the Baba Yara sports stadium.

According to the police, the students of Katanga Hall clashed with their counterparts in Unity Hall during Luv FM’s ‘Old School Reunion’ event at the stadium.

The students threw stones at each other, causing damage to a number of vehicles while blocking some roads. They also brought activities in the area to a halt.

The police intervened to avert an escalation.

The eight students who were arrested and taken to the Asokwa police station where their statements were taken, were later released on police enquiry bail.

The police, however, said it has in its possession a copy of a video footage which captured some police personnel brutalising some of the students during the arrest and have condemned it.

According to a statement, the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Department in the region have been assigned to investigate the conduct of the officers.
