Aflao, Aug. 04, GNA - A 25-year-old Nigerian, Amadu Bube, was sentenced to 70 years in prison in hard labour by the Aflao Circuit Court last Friday for robbery.
He pleaded not guilty and his accomplices are on the run.
Mr Akwasi Asafo-Agyei, Dzodze District Police Commander, told the court on January 6, a Nigerian registered car travelling from Komenda in the Central Region to Aflao en-route to Nigeria encountered a road block at a spot on the outskirts of Penyi at about 0300 hours.
Mr Asafo-Agyei said eight men emerged from the bush firing shots and ordered the passengers to come out and robbed them of their mobile phones and money.
He said just then a police patrol pulled up but the robbers fled with their booty.
Mr Asafo-Agyei said the following day passengers travelling to Aflao from Accra were robbed of their phones and huge sums of cash at the same spot.
He said descriptions by the second driver led to the arrest of Bube at Denu and he was later identified by the driver.
Mr Asafo-Agyei said a phone belonging to one of the passengers on the first car was found during a search in Bube’s room.
