Attack On NPP Constituency Chairman

Court remands Amankwah, six others

A circuit court chaired by Mrs. Ivy Heward-Mills at Amansama last Friday remanded Dickson Yaw Adjei Amankwah, Special Assistant to the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and six others in prison custody when they appeared before the court.

Amankwah who is also a New Patriotic Party (NPP) aspiring parliamentary candidate for Okaikoi North constituency and the six others, were in court under criminal summons for attacking Mr. John Owusu Afriyie, the NPP Constituency Chairman on Saturday July 17, which left him with a badly damaged eye.

Their pleads were not taken and they are to re-appear before the court today.

The Chronicle on last Monday published a story about how Amankwah and some people stormed the constituency office and attacked some party executives, injuring Mr. Owusu Afriyie and the constituency Youth Organizer, Abudulai Banda.

They were said to have gone to the constituency office in an AMA vehicle (registration number GT 7961 P) in which they sped off after the incident.

The two victims were taken to the Tesano Police station where they lodged a complaint after which they were issued with police medical forms for treatment at Achimota hospital. They were treated and discharged later in the day.

Mr. Owusu-Afriyie, who spoke to The Chronicle after being discharged from hospital expressed disbelief about the attack and said he would pursue the case to its logical conclusion to serve as a deterrent to people like Amankwah, who may perceive politics as life and death matter.
